NAHID & ADELE is a fiction short film written and directed by Tábata Cerezo, produced by Naif Films and Not Alone Productions and starring Silver Okpamen and Melina Matthews. With your help, filming will take place next fall.
Nahid & Adele follows the footsteps of a young Nigerian womann who works as a chambermaid in a Madrid hotel. In the same hotel is staying Adele, a European actress who is living a couple of months in Spain due to filming. Nahid will gradually be enveloped in Adele's intimacy until the meeting between them becomes inevitable.
Nahid is a young woman of Nigerian origin who recently immigrated to Spain in search of greater opportunities. She was an architecture student in her country but has been forced to work as a chambermaid in a Madrid hotel in order to resume her studies.
Adele is a French actress who is in Madrid due to the filming of a movie that will take her away from home for a month and a half. Adele's private world, her secrets and circumstances, will unfold little by little in front of Nahid, who is in charge of cleaning her room.
Throughout this story, Nahid will inevitably find herself immersed in Adele's intimate universe through the trail that she leaves in her space until, what at first aroused a certain curiosity in her, ends up being transformed into a mirror of her own present moment that culminates in an encounter between the two of them that social conventions predicted impossible.
Nahid & Adele is the story of the encounter between two unknown women united by the shared universal experience of being a woman.

DIRECTOR AND SCRIPTWRITER'S NOTES
Origin of the idea:
To what extent is our trace in space capable of leaving clues about who we are, of generating an inevitable narrative about our intimacy?
My work as an actress has led me to have to live for seasons in a hotel room on different occasions. I find it a curious, different loneliness, the one felt in these settings. I was always struck by the speed with which, through the scattering of our personal belongings, we are able to make those transitory spaces our own, as if the room were gradually soaking up the intimacy that we develop in it.
I remember once, watching a woman cleaning my hotel room, thinking how strange it would be to see that same stranger interact with my personal belongings if she were not dressed in her chambermaid uniform. It impacts me greatly to think to what extent we allow social structures to dictate our way of relating to another body in space. It seems that the moment a uniform or a specific nationality intervenes, we stop relating to another human being to do so in an invented way, with a cultural archetype in which we frame the other.
Nahid & Adele was born from my desire to break the agreed rules of what is expected of a relationship as hierarchical as that of the cleaner - guest. I want to investigate as a filmmaker at what moment we begin to be able to forget the established roles and we are able to see, simply, a woman taking care of the space of the other and a woman allowing the presence of another in her private world.
Sisterhood and the female gaze in filmmaking:
I am very interested in being able to investigate the definition of the word sisterhood through the audiovisual language. The R.A.E describes this idea as friendship or affection between women / solidarity relationship between women, especially in the struggle for their empowerment. I want to explore through this story to what extent this named solidarity of one woman towards another is a conscious and political exercise, or is, instead, an empathic instinct given by the universality of the female experience.
Protagonism is privilage:
I deeply believe in the idea that protagonism is privilege, a phrase quoted by the filmmaker Joey Soloway in a conference on the female gaze in filmmaking. This is the reason why, despite being able to identify myself more with the character of the actress, is Nahid, a young Nigerian woman, to whom I decided to give the point of view of this story. I believe that cinema has the power and responsibility to generate a portrait of diverse society, and that it is essential to begin to give the protagonism of our stories to the parts most invisible and punished by conventional narratives.
I am aware of the danger involved in appropriating narratives that do not belong to me and that it would have been daring to pretend to make a portrait of the intimacy of a woman whose circumstances are so unknown to me. For this reason, in this story, the dialogues will be put in the background and what will move the story forward is Nahid's gaze in front of the reality that unfolds in her work environment. The story will allow us to imagine certain circumstances of her life, but will not provide us with any obvious answers about her own privacy.
My intention with this story is to be able to provoke a reflection on the social machinery that makes invisible, through hierarchical structures at the service of a savage capitalism, an important part of society, condemning it to an often dehumanizing look on the part of the most privileged of the system.
In this sense, the habitual precariousness of the working conditions of the chambermaids, becomes an example of what are the consequences of having a voracious tourist sector.
This idea works in the short film intentionally as an ecosystem and not as the main plot. Nahid and Adele is a story about sisterhood, and it is through the protagonism and de-stereotyping of Nahid's character that I would like to provoke a reflection on the gaze that we often impose on those who carry out services around us.
Why this is important
Why Nahid & Adele?
This project was born thanks to the fundamental work of CIMA, which in an initiative to encourage collaboration between members, made it possible for the Tábata script to reach our hands. The beauty, essential and depth of the script, added to the way in which Tábata told us about how he wanted to shoot this story, were the drivers to start this journey together.
As producers we have the need to give voice and shape our experience as women in the world. It is important to see in the cinema relationships between women of union and understanding, and not of competitiveness. Nor do you see idealized or victimized women. We want to talk about real women going through difficulties and contradictions.
This story is also necessary for its way of breaking stereotypes about the immigration profile in Spain and for proposing a reflection on our class system and the precariousness of jobs such as housekeeping.
As conceived from pre-production, it is a project led by women, which forms a diverse team where experience coexists with the possibility of supporting young talent, as is the case with the director herself. Tábata, due to her extensive career as an actress, has a knowledge of the industry that, supported by her enormous and special sensitivity, makes her a value in itself.
It is for all these reasons that both Naif Films and Not Alone Productions have decided to produce this short film.
In what moment do we find ourselves?
Key pieces of the creative team are already working on the project with great enthusiasm and dedication. We have also confirmed the main location, thanks to the fact that the Hotel Eugenia de Montijo located in Toledo will let us use both the rooms and the rest of the hotel's facilities. We also have a storyboard, shooting plan, budget and financing and distribution plan. Our intention is to start filming at the end of September 2021.
Why do we need your help?
We all know how complicated and expensive it is to make films, and how precarious our profession remains on many occasions. With your contributions we will be able to carry this project forward in a dignified and professional way, being able to have the appropriate technical, logistical and human means to convey this story to you in the best possible way and taking care of all the professionals involved in the process.
