General information

Neurological disorders are the third most common cause of disability and premature death in the EU, and increase with the aging of our population. In fact, in Spain it is estimated that they may affect some 7 million Spaniards. These disorders are diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system, i.e. the brain, spinal cord, cranial and peripheral nerves, autonomic nervous system, nerve roots, neuromuscular plates and muscles. There are more than 600 neurological diseases, with neurodegenerative diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease being the most important.

Many of the causes of neurodegenerative diseases are unknown and available medical tests may only be useful in assessing the state of an already affected nervous system. The prognosis of neurodegenerative diseases can be quite serious, among other reasons because there is no way to prevent them and their treatments are ineffective as they are limited to palliating the symptoms and not curing the patient. Therefore, in neurodegenerative diseases, it is of vital importance to establish an early, rapid or predictive diagnosis to control a more favorable evolution and establish the most appropriate personalized treatment.

Our research group has been working on the search for inflammatory biomarkers that allow us to identify the main diseases with neurological involvement (Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, dementia, addictions, etc.). These biomarkers can be used for early detection of the disease, diagnosis, evaluation of its activity or monitoring the efficacy of its treatments. Recent findings show that type β-interferon (IFN-β) responses are a central element in neuroinflammation associated with neurological disorders, but at the same time are critical for neuronal function. Thus, type I interferon and its activity in the brain are potential targets in the investigation of new biomarkers for these pathologies, obtaining a clear clinical benefit.

Main features and goals of the crowdfunding campaign

Our objective is to identify biomarkers for early diagnosis of diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, dementia and cognitive impairment, since they do not exist. For this purpose, we have collections of serum samples from these patients, and their associated clinical data, from the Hospital Regional Universitario de Málaga and the Biobank of Málaga-IBIMA-SSPA. The project includes the publication of the results, their communication and dissemination, as well as their clinical-analytical validation. Finally, clinical practice guidelines will be developed in collaboration with the clinical team of the Hospital.
The project will be developed in 4 milestones:

  1. Recruitment of patients from the Neurology Department of the Hospital Regional Universitario de Málaga.
  2. Collect blood samples and obtain the plasmas.
  3. Measure inflammatory biomarkers with ELISA bioplex and SIMOA technology.
  4. Create a panel of markers that predict the disease.
  5. Communication and dissemination of results to society.

Why this is important

Neurodegenerative diseases, which affect the nervous system and cause memory loss, behavioral disorders and cognitive functions, are increasing worldwide as life expectancy increases. Currently, the World Health Organization estimates that there are more than 30 million patients in the world with Alzheimer's disease, with this figure doubling every five years.
This project is motivated by the need to advance in research on neurodegenerative diseases and in the constant search for tools that help early detection of the degenerative process and prevent the loss of cognitive functions (memory and learning).

This project is aimed at patients with neurodegenerative diseases (Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer, Parkinson) and their relatives, patient associations, professionals in care centers (hospitals and health centers), scientific community in neurology and mental health, academic community in health sciences, and the general population with higher life expectancy, susceptible to suffer with higher probability of a mental deterioration associated with age.

Team and experience

The research group is a consolidated group of the Biomedical Research Institute of Malaga (IBIMA), formed by a multidisciplinary team (physicians, nurses, psychologists, biologists and biochemists) belonging to the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Malaga and to the Clinical Units of Neurology and Mental Health of the University Regional Hospital of Malaga. The team has a solid track record of more than 25 years backed by very outstanding scientific contributions in the field of neuroscience and mental health.
