General information

Allan Savory (Zimbabwe, 1935) zoologist and botanist, naturalist and farmer proposes, based on his experiences and research in the African savannah, an alternative method of ecosystems management using livestock. Allan Savory is the creator of holistic management, a revolutionary approach to decision making and the use of management tools which can revert the process of desertification on a large scale, and mitigate climate change including carbon sequestration in pasture soils.
aleJAB wants to promote Allan Savory’s first visit to the Iberian Peninsula from June, 10th to 21st, 2019 to demonstrate to the Iberian world the importance of this international system for future solutions for semi-arid territories. We want to introduce Allan Savory first hand to our territory and ask him to provide, based on his unique trajectory, his vision and experience in the method of Holistic Management adapted to our context. We will offer various opportunities to participate in a range of training activities and events which will make up Allan Savory’s tour.
Holistic comes from the word “Holon” which means EVERYTHING. To manage something holistically is to try to see it in the round; to try to consider the entirety of all elements which we are managing and all the interrelationships. In fact, this means to take into account and manage the complexity of the biological, social, technological and economic systems. With this global vision we want to involve and raise awareness among as many people as possible who are receptive to a methodology that proposes that well managed animals lead to productive and stable ecosystems. This methodology creates resilient local economies, diverse and abundant flora, water retention, prevention from erosion, de-compacting soils and helps to capture carbon from the atmosphere. The chance to hear from the founder of the holistic vision provides an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the value of an alternative system which is vital for the health of the ecosystems around us.

Main features and goals of the crowdfunding campaign

Allan Savory together with Jody Butterfield (coauthor of the book “Holistic Management: a common sense revolution to restore our environment) and Daniel Ibarra (CEO of the Savory Institute), together with aleJAB (the Spanish hub of the Savory Institute) will tour different parts of the Peninsula where the processes of desertification and degradation of the soil together with the importance of livestock breeding require a radical change of approach.
Livestock is the best (or only) instrument to regenerate our soils, recover productivity and create a real economy in our territories. However, the future of livestock breeding is threatened: the animals are confined under deplorable conditions, they are fed with inadequate food (compound feeds, supplements and fodder), they are kept in one single place for a long period of time preventing the pasture from recovering and degrading the soil, they are being stuffed with medicine, antibiotics and deworming products which produce undesired effects for the consumer and the environment. Animals are being blamed for the degradation of the landscape and climate change, farming activity is criminalized and the generational shift is made difficult or impossible by absurd and inefficient bureaucratic barriers. The reduction in consumption of animal products is recommended to save the planet and health. A series of assumptions about the behaviour and even the rights of an animal make it difficult or impossible to treat them as what they are: animals who should be able to live in groups (herds) and be able to move (free ranging).
The objective of this campaign is to make the idea of Holistic Management known to farmers, professionals, scientists, conservation organizations and public agencies in order to reconcile the ancient practice of livestock management (transhumance, herding with dogs….) with the latest innovations and knowledge about the relationship between soil, water, vegetation and animals.
At the same time, the proposed objective is to position extensive Iberian livestock management (and especially on the dehesas) within the international panorama to demonstrate the coexistence of 6.000 years of human beings with nature.

branding-guidelines-3-.jpg allan-savory-1.jpg

Why this is important

On an international level, we want to demonstrate the ancestral contribution of best practice examples in sustainable Iberian livestock management as an example of a green and circular economy. In addition, the aim is to raise awareness among the public as to the relevance of extensive livestock management, not only in terms of nature and environmental conservation within the Iberian context but also to counteract global threats like climate change and desertification.

In this sense, our project is aimed at farmers, professionals, scientists and, by extension, to all those interested in Holistic Management and its practical application. To this end, HolistiCALLY: The Iberian tour of Allan Savory will involve four types of events:

1/Indoor (Master Class)
We will organize classes with Allan Savory and other members of the Savory Institute explaining the principles of Holistic Management and its potential to address many of the problems which are affecting our land: low productivity, soil degradation, desertification, rural depopulation……
In addition, we will invite other contributors from the academic and producing sectors in order to discuss the big issues which are affecting our immediate lives: dependence on external agricultural inputs, low soil fertility, serious wild fires, floods, rural depopulation, ink disease, de-worming…….and how these problems can be addressed by the Holistic Management approach.

2/ Outdoor (Sessions to communicate and disseminate information, including site visits)
We will visit demonstration farms which are applying Holistic Management where we will look in depth together with Allan Savory at which actions have been taken, and how this has affected the soil, plant and animal productivity, economic benefits…..
We will visit other farms with conventional livestock management and assess the impacts of continuous grazing.
We will also visit some natural places where we will look at what has happened when livestock have been excluded for a period of time for nature conservation reasons and how balance could be restored with holistically managed livestock.

3/Meetings
We will have private and public meetings with representatives from socio-political, scientific, productive and environmental sectors, and also with decision makers on land where we will share the Holistic Management approach in relation to issues concerning nature conservation, governance and care of the land.

4/ Social and festive events
We will celebrate cultural events together with like-minded people and share experiences and impressions while enjoying good food and music in exceptional artistic and natural surroundings.

Team and experience

aleJab is a non-profit association bringing together a network of agents for a change in agriculture. We are part of the global network of the Savory Institute and are accredited as the hub for the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa since December 2017.

The association was established in March 2016, but the people who make up aleJAB have been working towards regenerative livestock management for years:
We comprise 3 demonstration farms who have been applying and learning about Holistic Management since 2015. (Mundos Nuevos en Retamal de Llerena, Badajoz; Defesinhas en Elvas, Portugal; y Merineando, en Cáceres).

We have organized 9 courses given by Pablo Borelli, manager of the Argentinian company Ovis 21, to be qualified as trainers in Holistic Management and to implement the model in the Iberian Peninsula. We have organized courses in: Monitoring and evaluating pasture (Oliva de Plasencia, December 2015); Certification of regenerative pastoralism (Cabeza del Buey, Badajoz, December 2015); Introduction to HM, pastoralism planning, financial planning, and land-use planning (Aldeacentenera, Cáceres, March 2016); Introduction to HM and pastoralism planning (Los Velez, Almería, December 2016) Monitoring and evaluating pasture (Orduña, Gipuzkoa, May, 2017)

We comprise 5 trainers accredited by the Savory Institute
During 2017, 17 farms went through the Holistic Management assessment: 13 farms in Sierra de Gata and Las Hurdes (Mosaic Project of the Universidad de Extremadura); 2 farms in Gipuzkoa (decision making and planning of pasture) and another two farms in Navarra. We have given more than 20 talks about regenerative livestock management and Holistic Management and have organised 5 field days on demonstration farms with local farmers.

The present management board of aleJAB comprises:
