General information

In 2020, in Banyoles, we have a plan. It’s both exciting and urgent. And yes, to make it come true, we need all of you!

The Món Banyoles organisation is launching a non-profit social cooperative through which women from diverse backgrounds will run a bar-restaurant, which also aims to be a meeting place for local residents and associations.

Why? To break down walls and stereotypes. But, above all, to build a future with social justice.

Can you imagine a project that, by working from and with the community, contributes to personal autonomy and liberation? La Porta del Món aims to be one of those projects. Possibly, all projects that operate from a collective perspective are just that. Can you imagine a project that, by working from and for the community, contributes to personal autonomy and liberation? La Porta del Món aims to be one such project and, perhaps, all projects that work from a collective perspective are just that.

Main features and goals of the crowdfunding campaign

The cooperative is made up of women in particularly vulnerable social and/or employment situations, who often have limited resources to leave their homes and enter the labour market. For years, these women have expressed two basic needs: to improve their Catalan language skills and gain further training, so that they can find employment and achieve a certain degree of financial independence.
For this purpose, Món Banyoles is launching the ‘La Porta del Món’ project. A bar-restaurant will be established as a cooperative, run by women from diverse backgrounds. This will also host community activities organised by the Món Banyoles association and any other organisations wishing to make use of the space. Cuisine and various forms of cultural expression will serve as tools to bring us closer together, overcome prejudices and build a common future.
The women leading this project not only have great culinary skills, but above all, a remarkable strength and determination that should not be underestimated. They have demonstrated this at various community events, festivals and trade fairs. It is impressive and moving to watch them at work, see how they move, and admire the final presentation of their dishes. A profound yet humble expertise, which undoubtedly stems from the silent memory of generations of women—mothers and grandmothers—who have devoted their lives to caring for those around them.

OBJECTIVES

  • To secure a decent wage and working conditions for the cooperative’s members.
  • To make La Porta del Món a city landmark that highlights the inherent richness of diversity.
  • To run diverse catering and hospitality training courses for other women facing barriers to social and labour market inclusion.

Why this is important

Team and experience

Món Banyoles is composed of women from Banyoles from a wide range of backgrounds, most of whom have long-standing ties to the local community. The association includes philosophy teachers, domestic workers, cleaners, journalists, and people from the healthcare and non-profit sectors. The cooperative comprises women with professional kitchen experience alongside others with household expertise and know-how. Between other things, all of them were involved in the successful community meal on March 8th, where they served couscous to over 150 people

!The cooperative is growing with the guidance of the La Fàbrica Cooperative. Their experience, perseverance, knowledge and determination have been, and will continue to be essential to the project's viability. Thanks to them, the business plan and financial plan for the project are currently being finalised. Another key driving force is the Cepaim Foundation.
We must also highlight the advice provided by the Ateneus Cooperatius network in the region of Girona.

La Fonda Comas and La Porta del Món

The historic and much-loved Fonda Comas in Banyoles will be the venue for the cooperative.
Pere Angelats has explained how their business started seventy years ago by two women in his family: his grandmother, Ángela Coromina, and his mother, Maria Pagès Coromina. Seven decades later, the women of the La Porta del Món cooperative will launch a project that is the proud heir to a space that promises deep roots and great strength.
