General information

On 15th June 2011 thousands of people gathered at the gates of the Park de la Ciutadella in Barcelona to demonstrate their opposition to the deeply antisocial proposals being voted on that same day inside the Parliament of Catalonia. The mobilisation was a decision taken during the open, transparent and horizontal debates in the massive public assemblies that were taking place at that time.

In the first week of October of that same year, the Catalan Police, the Mossos d’Esquadra made 20 random arrest. People were held for hours in cells in different police stations when the only motive for their arrest was to summons them to appear before the National High Court in Madrid, accused of a “crime against the institutions of the State”.

Almost two years after these arrests, in April and May of this year (2014) the trial will take place at the National High Court, in San Fernando de Henares, close to Madrid. The 20 defendants are facing between 3 and 8 years in jail.

Main features and goals of the crowdfunding campaign

Covering the costs resulting from the trial of the 20 defendants

fotogoteo_1.jpg

Why this is important

This main motivation for initiative is born of the need to cover the costs of paying the lawyers. We have done all we can to ensure that the defence be as cheap as possible. The 20 defendants share six lawyers who are working for solidarity rates, because they support the cause.
We also feel that this Goteo is an interesting tool for communicating, and calling for solidarity. The project is directed to those of you who believe that the current political situation cannot continue; who are tired of having their dignity stamped upon. To all those who wish to demonstrate to the financial and political classes that an organised population has strength. We wish to show that cooperativism and community – in this case, economic support among equals – are the values of our world, not those that the current system would impose on us: selfishness, individualism, privacy… isolation.

Goals of the crowdfunding campaign

The aim is to let our compañeros, the accused in this case, rest a little. The circumstances that have been forced upon them create too many difficult emotions, and economic anguish need not be one of them. That is why we are calling on all of you who criticise this society, who want to go one step further, to accompany us with your support. If we can collect the money needed, the defendants will feel a little bit freer. We all know that economic security allows one to breathe easier, and focus ones efforts on what really matters.
