Ibrahim and his family are from the Al-Nasr district in Gaza City. After losing everything and being displaced many times during the ongoing genocide, they now live in Dier al-Balah. Ibrahim is responsible for supporting a total of 26 people, including several young children, a newborn baby, and a disabled adult; his family of 10; his uncle’s family of 6; his sister’s family of 5; and his grandfather’s family of 5. Everything Ibrahim and his family had built in Gaza City has been destroyed, and right now Ibrahim needs more than just donations: he needs a sustainable source of income to rebuild his life.
Before the war, Ibrahim ran his own business, and now he needs our support to start over. He has drawn up a business plan and a preliminary budget to launch a new grocery store that he would like to open in Al-Nasr, the Gaza City neighborhood where he grew up. Al-Nasr is a district near Al-Shifa Hospital, an area that used to have three grocery stores, though all were destroyed in the war. The space Ibrahim wants to rent for the store needs some repairs to become operational. It was offered to him by a man who knows Ibrahim and his family, so he will charge a very reasonable rent. Ibrahim’s goal is to provide a much-needed service to his community at the lowest possible cost. This is not just a business that will provide a reliable source of income for his family, but it will also be a necessary resource for the entire neighborhood—an element of community rebuilding.
We are a group of friends who have been working with Ibrahim for over two years to help him provide his family with basic necessities, and we are confident that, if we can secure the initial funds for the startup, this project will succeed.
We also believe in the potential of this initiative as a pilot project for rebuilding the Gaza Strip, devastated by bombs. It is a model that can be replicated so that, with collective support, Gazans themselves can rebuild their way of life autonomously. We firmly believe that territories belong to those who inhabit them, and contributing to their reconstruction is also a way to combat speculative buying and selling by third parties.
Main features and goals of the crowdfunding campaign
This project combines solidarity with economic empowerment and entrepreneurship with the reconstruction of a devastated region. The idea of opening a grocery store in the Al-Nasr area serves several objectives: on the one hand, to provide Ibrahim and his family with a stable source of income that grants them autonomy; and on the other hand, to offer local residents a low-cost neighborhood store where they can stock up on essentials. It is, therefore, both a family and community initiative, one rooted in solidarity and economic empowerment. Under both these aims, the overall objective is to support the reconstruction of a devastated territory and social fabric and to drive its recovery.
We will be documenting the process here: https://social.anartist.org/@ibrahimfriends and in the news section of this website.
Why this is important
Numerous initiatives have been launched by individuals and organizations to support and sustain the lives of Gazan people during this prolonged period of genocide. Palestine is a territory historically punished and a victim of colonization. Gaza, “the world’s largest open-air prison,” as historian Ilan Pappé described it, has been under siege for decades and suffers from the conditions of its isolation, making it very difficult for its population to access basic necessities, let alone achieve economic autonomy.
For two years now, we have been running a fundraising campaign (which is still ongoing) that we support through fundraising events or the sale of materials we produce for that purpose. But both Ibahim and his support group feel the need to find ways out of a situation that is often at breaking point.
We know how forgetfulness and exhaustion work, and although we continue actively with the fundraising campaign, donations have dropped significantly and we are falling short (we also know that there are many other people supporting other Gazans because the need is immense).
Team and experience
The people behind this initiative have been pooling our resources for over two years to support Ibrahim and his family on a monthly basis—despite our limited financial means—through a sustained fundraising campaign and the launch of various fundraising initiatives.
Some of us have been part of social economy networks, others contribute through artistic production, event organization, or outreach on social media, and we all share a strong commitment to solidarity and mutual support.
